Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara Yoga® is a powerful hatha yoga system that unifies a Tantric philosophy of intrinsic Goodness with the Universal Principles of Alignment. Its’ uplifting philosophy, epitomized by a “celebration of the heart,” looks for the good in all people and all things. Mysore Ashtanga Practice Group: Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him to fish and he can eat for the rest of his life – Chinese proverb ……. Mysore Ashtanga intends to do this. This practice is designed to help the yogini have the tools so that she may develop her own practice. Mysore style is for the beginner or advanced, the young or the old. This style practice accommodates everyone. It is an intimate, personal and developed way of practicing yoga as well as a traditional, time-honored and historic method. The ‘Mysore Style’ method is named after the city where our teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, lived and taught and where his grandson, Sharath, continues this teaching style from his teacher Krishnamacharya. In this special class, you learn to take individual responsibility for your yoga practice and develop a deeply trusting relationship with your teacher. It is perhaps the only way that the more advanced asanas or postures can be learned safely, with proper skill and dedication. By committing yourself fully to one yoga style, one teaching method and a regular practice, you open the door to deeper levels of your body, mind and spirit. This class is not your usual yoga class in the sense that there is no one teacher that is leading the group. There are practiced isntructors there to assist you and help you to learn the practice, each in his or her own time and ability.
Yoga Basics: Lots of instruction on alignment and use of props. This class is intended to help you get yoga in your body and to learn the language of yoga. You will learn the most commonly practiced standing and seated poses and how to practice them safely, honoring your own body and level of strength and flexibility. This is where your journey with yoga begins.
Focus on Back and Core: Class designed to specifically target your center. You will learn strengthening and stretching for the back muscles, hips, abdominals, and hamstrings to develop and then maintain balance in this area.
Flow: A moving practice of yoga: The breath leads movement into, within, and out of the poses. Poses linked together with breath. The speed of the class is dependent on the instructor.
Jivamukti Yoga: The Jivamukti Yoga system was founded by David Life and Sharon Gannon. Jivamukti Yoga – a powerful flow of postures built upon the steady rhythm of ujjayi breathing, using sound and music to transform negative emotions into fuel for enlightenment, along with learning practical applications of classical yoga scriptures, pranayama, and meditation in every class. The pace in these classes is slow, deliberate, and attentive.
Kundalini Yoga: Kundalini Yoga is a comprehensive system that includes postures, kriyas, breathwork, mudras, mantras, and more. Class begins with a warm-up, emphasizing rhythmic movements and asanas. This is followed by a Kriya – a specific sequence of exercises designed to optimize the body’s systems and harmonize it’s energies. Each Kriya has a focus – cleansing the liver, calming the nerves, strengthening the heart, alleviating anger, etc. Every Kundalini Yoga class helps balance all the chakras and systems. Class winds down with integrative deep relaxation, and a short pranayama or mantra meditation. Kundalini Yoga is appropriate for all levels and ages. This class is instructed as taught by Yogi Bhajan, the founder of Kundalini Yoga, and is not a hot class.
Mindful Flow: A deliberate, calming and steadying vinyasa class with focus on ujiai breath as the “one point” of concentration. Alignment-based instructions to inform each pose, and meditations to open and feel the heart. Cat’s classes always begin with slow and deliberate sun salutations to build warmth in the tissues. All classes who instruct Mindful Flow at this studio pay close attention to your alignment to avoid injuriesand help you to receive the full benefit of each posture in your body and mind.
Baby and Beloved: This class is for newborns up to well-moving crawlers and their parent/friend/guardian. In this class, there are yoga exercises just for babies based upon their individual levels of development, yoga postures for the adult companions which incorporate the babes, songs, gentle movement, infant massage and quiet time. Come and meet your community of babies and friends through this fun and playful approach to yoga with your little one!
Power Yoga: Power Yoga classes are dynamic yoga classes which build deep strength and stamina. This class begins with creative sun salutes to warm the body and assist in developing endurance and increasing circulation. Then we move in and out of standing poses, core strength development, and a mixture of flowing movement with long holds in the poses to develop deep power in your body. Twists, inversions, folds, and backbends are all worked in to create a very balanced practice while illuminating your potential for great strength and freedom.
Pre-natal: Specially designed to support mama in her journey of creation. These classes focus on building strength around the hips and low back to support your changing body as well as stability around the pelvis. You will also learn poses to strengthen your arms and stretch open your chest and shoulders to prepare for nursing and/or carrying your new sweet baby when the baby comes. Standing poses and seated poses are incorporated through the practice. No previous experience with yoga is required.
Subtle Yoga: Subtle Yoga is a holistic, therapeutic and integrative approach to practice which includes asanas, pranayama, meditation, philosophy, a call to service and a focus on increasing self-awareness. Subtle Yoga uses yoga poses which balance your chakra system in order to balance your mind and help you experience joy as you connect to the deeper layers of self. Postures are repeated in a subtle, flowing manner, coordinated with the breath and often performed with breath-retention and/or breath-counting techniques. Subtle yoga is not the same thing as Gentle Yoga – it can be softer or more strenuous, and there is always a choice for various levels of practice. Subtle Yoga will help you find depth in your practice and allow that depth to spill over into your every day life. Suitable for all levels of yoga practice.
