Deirdre Smith Gilmer
Deirdre’s most important accomplishment to date is bringing her son, Kai, into the world on December 27, 2007. She is incredibly blessed with a healthy son, a loving husband, a supportive family, amazing friends, two wonderful dogs, and the best yoga community in the world!
Deirdre, a certified Anusara Yoga Instructor, moved to Asheville in 2006 from New York City. She danced professionally in NYC for 13 years, as well as, discovered her love for yoga and teaching.
While in NYC, Deirdre taught yoga for NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Long Island University, Ballet Arts at City Center, World Yoga Center, Shri Yoga, The Yoga Room, and Yoga Mandali studios. She trained in the Iyengar and Ashtanga methods before discovering the beauty of Anusara. Deirdre is also a certified Yoga Alliance teacher.
She is originally from NC and received her BFA in Dance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. While living in New York, Deirdre returned to NC every summer where she directed the dance program at the NC Governor’s School in Winston-Salem. She was also on the faculty of the American Dance Festival in Durham for 4 summers. Deirdre maintains one foot in NYC while directing the Creative Movement Program for children in the Imagine Early Learning Centers.
In Asheville, she has taught for and loves West Asheville Yoga, One Center Yoga, MAHEC, and the Asheville School of Massage & Yoga. Deirdre is dedicated to building the Anusara Kula in Asheville. Her passion for the practice and her creative approach to yoga and life are clear in her classes!
