Yoga Stops Traffick! Help end human traffickingDate: Mar 13, 2010 Join us Saturday, March 13th at 2:00pm as we gather to practice yoga and raise funds to support Odanadi, an organization in India dedicated to stopping human trafficking. The 2009 Trafficking in Persons report states: “India is a source, destination, and transit country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labour and commercial sexual exploitation.” There are an estimated 1.2 million prostituted children currently enslaved throughout India. Every day hundreds of vulnerable women and young people are lured into brothels, domestic slavery and begging rackets, and denied basic human rights. Together, we can change it. Mindy Pardoll, our lovely ashtanga intsructor, is joining thousands of yogis and ashtangis around the world to raise awareness of this tragedy and gather funds to support this organization in their fight. Do either 108 sun salutations or 108 minutes of your own yoga/meditation practice. Just show up. Help these kids. You'll feel really good that you did. Sun salutes will be led by various instructors from the West Asheville Yoga community, incorporating resting poses and pauses for breathing.
An Evening of Sacred Music and Equinox Celebration with Japa and special guest MelanieDate: Mar 20, 2010 **Please note that we originally planned this for Friday but have changed it to Saturday, the Equinox. We will do some special ceremonial honoring of this transition time as we welcome greater Light into our lives as the seasons change once again. Come sing and chant with us as Cat, Jeff, Alvin, Scott, Jacci, and special guest, Melanie, play sacred chants and modern sounds to lift your voice and heart. We mix harmonium, electric bass, guitars, percussion, and harmonizing voices to bring you out of your ordinary life and into a sublime state of joy and communal celebration. Kirtan is music to open your heart and expand your connection with the community around you and with the Divine. Our kirtan songs are call and response singing so you are encouraged to sing with us as we weave music from the East and West together with our voices to create a rich tapestry of joyful sound. Cat Matlock leads the songs and plays harmonium. Alvin Young is a world class bass player who is also a part of the signed kirtan group Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band. See them at www.seanjohnsonandthewildlotusband.com. Scott Mills is a devoted yogi who plays guitar with us and adds beautiful harmonies to the songs. Jeff Schmitt has been playing drums for over 25 years and his percussion adds focus and depth to the music. Our lovely Jacci together with Melanie will lead the responses. Melanie is a harmonium player and vocalist who also sings with Kalidas, Sangita Devi, and Kristin Luna Ray. Suggested donation is $10-$20 with no one turned away due to inability to pay. Free Introduction to Working with Despachos in the Peruvian TraditionDate: Apr 09, 2010 You are invited to learn about working with despachos in the Peruvian tradition. Jenn Aquilina will be leading two different despacho ceremonies at the yoga studio. We invite you to learn about it by attending this free introduction where Jenn will be explaining some history behind the creation of a despacho, what it is, what you might expect, and be available for questions. The ceremonies begin the next day and are sprad 3 weeks apart to allow for integration of the first despacho. Basically, as Jenn describes, "A despacho ceremony is an offering made to the mountains, Mother Earth, and nature spirits. We do this in thanks and reciprocity for the blessings in our lives, and to this beautiful land on which we live. You are invited to come and participate as we open sacred space and create this offering together as a community." A despacho offering consists of many items that are symbolic representations of the earth, masculine, feminine, seeds, fruition, the sky, and so on. It is built in layers with our prayers going into each item we place in the despacho. We will also be placing quintus, offerings made of leaves containing our prayers in the despacho. It is not uncommon for you to notice shifts or changes in your life and yourself. These may show up in many forms; from outer occurrences, to physical, mental, emotional or spiritual shifts. Learn more at the free introduction. Please sign up if you can to let us know how many to expect, but you can show up last minute if you need.

Sacred Earth Ceremony - Despacho to Heal the Feminine Principle with Jenn AquilinaDate: May 01, 2010 A despacho offering consists of many items that are symbolic representations of the earth, masculine, feminine, seeds, fruition, the sky, and so on. The despacho on May 1 will be a despacho for the healing of the feminine. When we speak of healing the feminine we are referring to that aspect within all of us, the anima. She is the place that grows life. She is the fertile earth in ourselves. In this despacho, we are calling back any lost pieces of ourselves due to trauma. We are also honoring the feminine in our culture where there are not often ceremonial rites of passage. When we honor the feminine and receive this energy, our ability to heal and become more whole is increased. |
