Libby Hinsley took her first yoga class a decade ago as a college student and something about it wanted to stick. It was only after five years of Iyengar yoga classes and a solid foundation in asana that she discovered the powerful, transformative effects of movement and breath through Ashtanga and vinyasa yoga. She was elated to find a new freedom of movement in the body and a new awakening of the spirit. Several years of training in mindfulness meditation as well as a growing interest in Yin yoga have made her witness to the capacity of the mind to be transformed by stillness as well as movement. Her practice continues to evolve and serves as a treasured touchstone, connector, and vehicle for self-discovery. As a student of yoga, she is particularly interested in yoga’s ability to restore balance and unblock subtle energies of the body to bring healing where it is needed. She is proud to be a “yoga mutt” who blends elements of many traditions. She likes to say that “yoga is all of the above,” so find a yoga practice that feels good in the body, expands the spirit, and connects you to a sense of the Divine. Otherwise, why practice? She is blessed to have the gift of yoga in her life and looks forward to many more years of learning.

Through her teaching, Libby hopes to expose students to the magic of their own bodies and the brilliance of their own spirits just as they are. She believes yoga is most effective if it empowers students to trust the wisdom of their bodies to find asana variations and modifications that work for them. She gives special attention to heart-opening, mindfulness, and self-acceptance. At West Asheville Yoga, her flow yoga with meditation class on Sunday mornings offers a balance of movement and stillness. The asana practice generally consists of a strong, slow, vinyasa flow emphasizing awareness of breath and movement. A 10-15 minute meditation session begins and ends each class.

Her pre-natal class on Friday mornings focuses on safety, strength and support for pre-natal mothers and the sacred connection between mother and baby. She received her teacher certification from the Asheville Yoga Center and holistic pre-natal teacher certification from Namaste Yoga and Healing Center. She is currently working toward completion of a 500 hour advanced teacher certification through the Asheville Yoga Center and is honored to share yoga with others.

Off the yoga mat, Libby completed an M.S. in Environmental Studies at the University of Montana and now works for the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project. She loves being with plants in the woods and growing them in her garden.
